Death, Divorce, Buying/Selling a house (moving). According to psychologists, these are the top three most stressful life events. And while we are constantly involved in the 'moving' stressor, sometimes our transaction involves death or divorce as well. So how do we navigate these choppy waters with professionalism, compassion and grace?
Here are a few suggestions that have helped ease tension in my experience.
Offer a kind word or gesture. Sometimes a mere acknowledgement is validation enough.
Anticipate challenges to the extent possible and plan accordingly. Allow extra time for a challenging client. Make allowances for a busy day.
Make someone feel like an MVP. Mirror, Validate, & emPhathize. People often just want to be heard.
Our industry is somewhat adversarial by nature and certainly stress inducing at times. But if we strive to maintain our professionalism and allow a bit of grace (for ourselves and others), we can mitigate tension and facilitate satisfactory results for all parties.
