As our industry moves forward, how do we keep our staff current?  And how do we train newcomers?  The automatic response tends to be that training is either to expensive or too time consuming.  But perhaps it's worth repeating that a LITTLE time and money up front can save a LOT of time and money down the road.

So, what are some training methods or devices that help ensure value?

Add humor.  Humor lightens the mood and makes those training more relatable.

Use Icebreakers.  Icebreakers give learners a chance to participate, as well as helping trainers learn something about them.

Zoom Out/In/Out.  Helps learners see the part their role plays in the big picture.  Students retain more when they see the "why."

Use personal stories and experiences.  Trainers become real people through the sharing of their own experiences.  Remember, facts tell but stories sell.

Employ Metaphors. Metaphors build a bridge between something we know and something we don't. Regarding different software or office procedures for example:

Play Games.  Games and incentives help make learning fun, and who doesn't like fun?

What training methods have you used, or what device helped you learn best?
