If you read Part 1 and are ready to proceed, this section will guide you through the installation of the two most commonly used Authentication applications. Using an authenticator app is straightforward and involves three simple steps.
- Once you have logged in and authenticated your account, the first step is to scan a barcode presented to you.
- The second step involves adding a new site to your authenticator app by clicking on the "+" sign. Your phone's camera will open up, and you should point it at the barcode. The app will then create a new entry.
- Finally, in the last step, you need to enter the six-digit code in your authenticator app to complete the enrollment process.
It's that easy!
To install and configure Google Authenticator, follow these steps:
- Go to the Google Authenticator website and click the "Download" button.
- Choose the Google Authenticator version appropriate for your device (such as iOS, Android, or Blackberry).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install Google Authenticator on your device.
- Open the Google Authenticator app and follow the on-screen instructions to create an account and set up your profile.
- Once you have set up your account, you can start using Google Authenticator to generate and store your two-factor authentication codes. To do this, simply open the app and click on the account you want to generate a code for.
- When prompted, enter your password (if required) and then click on the "Generate Code" button. This will generate a six-digit code that you can use to authenticate your login.
- To use the code, simply enter it into the appropriate field when prompted during the login process. The code will be valid for a limited time, after which you will need to generate a new one.
- In addition to generating codes, Google Authenticator also allows you to manage your two-factor authentication accounts and settings. You can use the app to add, edit, or delete accounts and customize your preferences and settings.

If you are using a password manager for your password, some, Bitwarden in particular, offers a built-in authenticator application. This simplifies the storage and management of both passwords and MFA.
