Recently, LinkedIn has started using user data to train its AI models. The discovery has sparked concerns about privacy and data security. The company, owned by Microsoft, is utilizing data from user profiles, posts, and other content on the platform to enhance its AI features. It includes information from profile pages, posts, and interactions. The goal is to improve user experience by making the platform more relevant and useful.
The main problem is that LinkedIn did not inform users in advance about this practice. Many users are unaware that their data is being used in this way. Furthermore, LinkedIn's terms and policies do not clearly mention the use of AI or artificial intelligence, which adds to the confusion and concern.
If you're uncomfortable with LinkedIn using your data for AI training, you can opt-out. Here's how:
- Click on your profile image in the header menu and select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown menu
- Scroll down to the How LinkedIn uses your data section and find the Data for Generative AI Improvement option
- Turn off the switch for Use my data for training content creation AI models
- Please note this will turn off the use of your "future data" for AI training. The ship has sailed for the data you already have in your account.
While AI can significantly enhance user experience, companies must be transparent about how they use personal data. LinkedIn's recent actions highlight the importance of staying informed about privacy settings and taking control of your data when you sign up and periodically after when you use social media services.
