  • 1.  Job Hunting Tips

    Posted 04-21-2023 11:14

I'm writing an article of tips and tricks to finding a job in the title industry.

Aside from the obvious, search Indeed, Monster, and LinkedIn Job postings. What tips, tricks and suggestions do you have for job hunters?

As an employer, how have you gone about filling positions? Where have you looked to find talent? Is there anything a potential employee can do that would set them apart from the crowd?

As a job hunter, where have you found your best jobs? Do you have any creative suggestions on places to look, people to talk to, things to do?

Your job posting needs to be the best that it can be to attract candidates. I recommend contacting your local colleges. There are a pool of students looking for jobs. Students are savvy in tech which is a benefit. They are also able to provide references from their professors. That has been a valuable resource for us.

Thanks Gail and to those who have reached out to me privately!

Great tips. I think I'm going to turn this into 2 articles - one for job hunters and one for employers! These will make an excellent addition to the 10 job profiles in the knowledge base on the Wicked Title Forum that employers can copy/paste to use in their job postings. I'm also compiling data on the time it takes to do some common title tasks to help people set appropriate performance metrics.

    Keep the tips coming!

Cheryl, as an employer, I am more inclined to look at someone's culture and communication & technical skills & talents, in general, rather than whether, or what, experience they have in the industry.  You cannot teach culture, and sometimes it is difficult to teach communication skills.  However, if they have all of that, it is not hard to teach them about what we do and how to do it.  I have had way more success with training people from scratch than hiring those with industry experience, because many with experience are not willing or able to adapt to doing things the way my office does them.  Just my 2 cents.

Nancy, 100% that's been my experience too. I've lost count of how many people I've trained from scratch over the years. They've always been my best people.

Personally, if I see a resume from someone with 30 years of experience and 20 different employers, I know they are just being passed around the industry and I'd probably pass on them. I know people change jobs far more often now then they used to, and that's fine, but if it happens frequently, it gives me pause.

I'd much rather hire someone with the skills you can't teach.
